This is a rare find from the Meiji period 1868 – 1912 Japan & would have been used to light a temple or palace or the pathway to one. Turned to electric in the early 1900's by the look of the original plug that's on it. Would need some restoration since the pull chains are stuck. The shade has seen better days, but appears to be from around the flapper era 1920's. This could all be removed & the torch put back to original condition.

It measures 5'3" tall, but with the shade measures approx. 6' tall without a finial. It measures 14" across at the base & the shade is approx. 24" across by 17" high. There are two amazing bronze dragon statues in relief around the neck of the lamp, both having beautiful green glassy scales. The whole lamp has been done in bronze with exquisite Champlevé work, which is done by first carving the design by hand in the metal, then filling the carved out areas with crushed glass & baking it in a hot oven. They had to bake each piece several times over & over again for each color. They start with the highest temperature first with the color of glass that needed higher heat to melt, then they would move to lower heat where the next color would melt, but not the previous color & would continue the process until all the colors were used & spaces were filled. They did it this way so the colors wouldn’t run into each other. A piece like this would have taken many weeks to complete. There is a very little amount of damage to the small globe, but over all it's in very good shape.
